Nestled in the town centre, the Tufton Arms Hotel is an intimate, upmarket hotel, which was originally a 16th century coaching inn and is now a Grade II listed Victorian building. Ceased to be borough and county town 1974, on creation of new county of Cumbria; its name was subsequently changed to Appleby-in-Westmorland. Orton - The village of Orton stretches languidly in all directions but never loses sight of its focal centre, where several roads and footpaths converge. Appleby was the county town of Westmorland until 1974, when the boundary lines were redrawn and the ancient counties of Cumberland and Westmorland disappeared to be replaced by Cumbria (which also includes bits of Lancashire). In 1671 Sir Daniel Fleming described Appleby as being ‘so mean’ and devoid of manufacturing that it would be ‘little better than a village’ were it not for its county town functions.

Note - if you plan to visit on the Monday or Tuesday (10th and 11th) you may be disappointed as there will be very little to see. The route starts directly from Kirkby Stephen Railway Station and meanders through woodland, following the River Eden until it reaches Appleby. Straddling the B1207 – the historic Roman Road of Ermine Street which once ran directly from London to York, the village nestles on the dipped slope of a limestone escarpment that falls gently towards the River Ancholme to the east. Appleby Horse Fair: A variety of Information and books are available on the famous Appleby Horse Fair held in June each year. In addition to classes and exhibits, there are a variety of stands, children’s entertainment and a craft tent.

The Appleby Horse Fair, also known as Appleby New Fair, is "an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England.

Almshouses for single elderly ladies, known as St Anne’s Hospital, founded 1653 by Lady Anne Clifford and endowed with estate at Brougham and lands formerly belonging to St Nicholas’ hospital. This doesn’t mean Appleby is off limits; it’s a great way to explore and enjoy the town without the crowds. For guided swims, Ullswater Swim Place is a small businesses situated on the shores of the lake at Another Place Hotel. Information is also available on what to see and do around the Eden Valley, Cumbria - The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines. Although Haweswater may look tempting for swimmers, it is off limits due to its status as a reservoir. A popular swimming route is to swim along the river towards Whale farm; here there is a crystal clear pool with spots along the riverside for a break and a picnic! The town remained a municipal borough until such status was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. The original Appleby practised in Bermuda and was established by Major Reginald Appleby, who commenced practice in the late 1890s.
