Two Velcro tabs either side of the waistband help to fine-tune the MT500 Burners’ fit. Dave Caudery / Our Media Long gone are the days of heavy, shapeless motocross pants; modern mountain bike trousers come in a range of technical fabrics to suit different conditions and there are more choices than ever for women. They’re an increasingly popular alternative to shorts, with lots of different options on the market.

Part of the award-winning MT500 Collection, Endura have seriously turned up the All-mountain dial to create the latest and greatest iteration of the best-selling MT500 Waterproof Trouser II. Collection of choice for Dowhill Legends the Athertons. Full length leg zips feature improved venting options and offer easy on off with shoes on. The new, more durable ExoShell40DR™ fabric and styling update to keep them in line with the rest of the revamped MT500 waterproof collection, these are sure to be your go to wet weather trousers for rides to come. PFC-Free and built to last this product now also has strong environmental credentials and is MADEKIND. EXOSHELL40DR™ Because the MT500 Burners are slimmer than some rival pants, you don’t get issues with them bunching heavily at the ankles – something that’s a real plus when they’re soaking wet. One feature I never used was the ankle zips that open up the bottom of the trousers and run along the reflective seam that dominates the design of the lower leg. I don’t really know why they are there to be honest as I can’t imagine people putting their riding trousers on after their shoes. Some trousers are cut roomier in the knee, so they don’t tighten up as you pedal and also allow you to wear knee pads underneath. A few trousers even have reinforced material over the knee, so if you do skin your knees you’re less likely to put a hole in the material. Waterproofness Gone are the days when if you wanted to be warm while riding, you’d need to get yourself some tight-fitting downhill pants. The Endura MT500 Spray Trouser is part of the new wave of light, comfortable full length numbers that keep the worst of the elements off you.

As with all of Endura's DWR treated garments, an environmentally friendly PFC free DWR has been used in line with Endura's commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. The pull-on style has a wide, stretchy yoga-legging style waist band, which hugs the hips and is great news if you’re curvy, and if ordinary trousers have a tendency to gape at the rear on you. A drawstring also means you can tighten and secure it to give a little more secure fit. However, I did find that these trousers had a tendency to pull down a little when riding – a problem we didn’t experience on the similarly designed Shredly MTB Shorts – possibly because of the pull of the fabric when worn over kneepads. Knee pads are a must for serious mountain biking. The cut of these pants ensures that you can wear them in unrestricted comfort. One of the first things to note is the extensive range of sizes that Shredly offers, which means a much greater range of women with different body shapes are able to find technical trousers that fit and look good. It’s something we wish more brands would do.

The waistline is elasticated at the rear and has an adjustable aluminium loop fastening at the front, which can be a touch fiddly. The elasticated waist however, is a comfort godsend, reducing any pressure into your stomach when riding. endura mt500 freezing point trouser zip.JPG, by Liam Mercer Endura MT500 Freezing Point Trousers - PerformanceCombine performance, comfort, fit and the price and you have the best on test – totally recommended. You might expect a more relaxed fit with baggy in the title, but don’t be fooled into thinking these are a shapeless offering – far from it. The waist has a simple zip and popper closure and a very subtle mtb-specific OppoSet waistband that allows you to tweak the waist size to your perfect fit. The only slight downside is length – if you are at the taller end of the scale then it may be a touch short in the leg. Ben tested Endura’s MT500 Spray Trouser to see if they can stand up to the wettest British winter in years.

The short review is that they are pretty awesome. I never get a wet bum, no matter how much spray there is and the DWR coating on the front is only just wearing off after more than a dozen washes. The breathability is as good as it gets and I rarely got too hot in the MT500s. When I did, I could reach for the zip vents on the thighs to lose some heat on the climbs.

The cut is feminine but loose, with 4-way stretch to the fabric, and an articulated knee and elasticated ankle cuffs, jogger-style. Low- to mid-profile knee pads fit comfortably underneath the pants. I experienced some rubbing on my left knee when not wearing kneepads from a stray, scratchy thread which was uncomfortable over longer distances. My first winter’s riding was this tight and waterproof combo - and the additional faff of three layers (liner shorts, tights, waterproofs) was just that - a faff. And having three layers often meant a slippy feeling on the saddle. Also as things warmed up, temperature regulation became an issue. Yes, I own thermal bib tights with pad - but then you’re washing an enormous, expensive garment after every ride - not a cheap liner short. The MT500 Burner Pant borrows innovation from the race kit developed for the Athertons, taking advantage of the latest durable stretch fabrics to provide the desired contemporary, flap free, slim fit with the freedom of movement required for extreme DH riding. Updated for this season, they now feature a new and improved fit and more comfortable front ratchet fastening. Winter can provide some of the most epic riding days with cool, crisp air and snow-dusted trails. Reset the thermostat with the new MT500 Freezing Point Trouser and make even the coldest winter day a riding day. The styling and comfort is such that I’ve been using these pants for general wear; they’re also great for walking. Overall, there’s a whole lot to love about these pants, though I’d like to see some improvement in the waistband.
