About this deal

Always follow the manufacturer’s preferred method. This may involve treating the entire cut surface of the stump, drilling holes around the living edge of the stump to pour the granules into, or using a chisel or axe to make wedge-shaped incursions around the edge of the bark (often used for standing trees). These notches can then be filled with granules or brushed with the liquid weedkiller

When Which? Gardening magazine trialled different methods for controlling horsetail, we found that spraying with Vitax SBK weedkiller after trampling plants had the most immediate impact, rapidly reducing the number of weeds. What is the best organic control for horsetail? The weed killer needs to be diluted. Then, the diluted product can be sprayed or applied directly to the stem of the weeds. This makes it possible to avoid getting weed killer on other plants. As well as tough, woody weeds, SBK is also capable of getting rid of tree stumps; a diluted solution needs to be poured into drilled holes in the wood which turns the stump soft and mushy after about a month. It’s also one of the best products in terms of value for money, coming in a liquid concentrate that can be diluted to cover up to 667 m². Like many off-the-shelf weed killers, it contains glyphosate. While this is strong enough to kill weeds, it’s also strong enough to harm pollinators and pond life. Having said that, treated areas can be replanted 7 days after application, which isn’t bad going for a weed killer.Use plant protection products safely and always read the label. Keep out of reach of animals and children. Considering how effective this product can be, it’s one of the best tree stump killers for stopping tree growth and damaging the roots themselves. Plus, it’s not overly expensive considering the quantity provided. Always follow the dosing, application and health-and-safety instructions given on the label of the product concerned. Longevity: Any weed killers that needed to be reapplied after rain were significantly marked down, as this doubled the time you’d have to spend on weed killing. Weed killers that killed the entire plant, including the roots, were rated the best, as these are the only products that ensure long-lasting results.

The only negative when it comes to application is that it takes a few pumps to get a decent amount of weed killer out. You’ll need to get fairly close to the weeds to cover them, and those with weaker hands or reduced mobility may find they’re working harder than is comfortable for them. This product will allow children and pets to return to the treated areas a couple of hours after it has dried and you can replant flowers or sow seeds seven days after spraying. It is highly recommended that you use the adjuvant KPlus combined with SBK to enable the triclopyr to break down the silica outer layer of the horsetail and increases its ability to penetrate into the weed achieving greater results. One downside of this weed killer is that it makes the soil unusable for a period of time. This is fairly disappointing if you’re wanting to get planting. The instructions state that it takes a ‘growing season’ to wear off, meaning potentially an entire spring or summer! One thing to note about this weed killer is that it doesn’t work especially fast. To kill the roots, it needs around 3-4 weeks. While the weeds do start to wilt within a few hours, it takes 7 days before I actually felt the weed killer was working! Despite the slower results, it does work as well as others on the market, and it’s very easy to use.

The nozzle can be twisted to select either a ‘jet’ or a mist; however, the mist is not particularly fine. The jet, on the other hand, can be used as expected to sufficiently target individual weeds. Grubbing out by hand or mechanical mini-excavator removes the majority of the root system. Removal is easiest if trees are cut down so that a significant length of trunk remains to give leverage to help in removal. Landscape contractors are often skilled at stump removal, but you can hire mini-excavators and operators separately. If you only have a couple of stumps to get rid of, this Resolva Xtra Tough Tree Stump Killer has enough oomph to solve the problem without forcing you to buy more product than necessary. This bottle contains 360 g of product, enough to cover a 1666 sqm area. It does require mixing before application, but it comes with a measuring cap included which is very easy to use. It can be applied using either a watering can or a sprayer. These stump killers work by speeding up the process of decay, essentially melting the stump away to make it much easier to remove the remnants, either by burning, chopping or pulling them out of the ground. It tends to take around a month to see progress within this decaying process, but with products constantly evolving and improving, there are some removers which have managed to cut this time down quite considerably. Introducing Different Hormones. The plant’s hormones dictate its growth. Some weed killers contain plant hormones that, when applied to the plant, confuse the plant’s growth system. This will kill weeds as the plant eventually becomes deformed and dies. Roundup fast action comes in 5 L container which will give you 10 minutes of continuous spraying. How much of an area will this cover? Well we found you do roughly 130m2 to 150m2 depending on how you apply it. One or two bottles will be more than enough for most gardeners out there. You might want to avoid glyphosate if you are concerned about damaging surrounding plants or grass . It is a non-selective herbicide. Triclopyr is a selective herbicide that shouldn’t kill grass when used in the correct dosage. However, there are some other weed-removal options that you can consider, or that you might want to use alongside chemical weed killers:
