As you can see in this picture in the top right corner, we still have black from where we originally used the grout to get the top line of the tile. If you’re installing grout for the first time, I would highly suggest that you just get black grout to begin with. Sealed grout should never be cleaned with anything else or it will cause the sealant to breakdown and eventually fail–leading to discolored grout. For the time and effort it takes and the inexpensive cost, I personally would take the risk and paint if cleaning fails.Maybe another round with the Swiffer would’ve helped, but I’m impatient and tend to just dive right into things. The tile in our kids’ bathroom was absolutely beautiful and had a shiny finish to it that I wanted to highlight, so we went with a grout color that was the same color as the tile. Following these steps helps maintain the darkness of the black grout, but unfortunately, there are some spots that just turn more of a gray color in between cleanings. Pairing white subway tiles with black or charcoal grout was a fairly standard practice during this show and many people have used this combination in their own homes.Your grout will always look black from a distance, but when you get up close, it may lose some of its luster and depth of color over time. The answer to this question will be a total personal preference and depends on what you like in your space and the look you’re going for. We have found that even after our black grout has been thoroughly cleaned and sealed, within a few months, I notice it fading in spots where water hits it the most.
